Overview
The game's presentation is nothing short of spectacular. Square Enix has brought Midgar to
life with stunning detail, from the oppressive industrial architecture of the upper plates
to the cluttered, makeshift settlements of the slums below.
Character models are exceptionally detailed, with facial animations that convey subtle
emotions during both cutscenes and in-game conversations. The attention to detail extends to
environmental effects, lighting, and particle systems that make the world feel tangible and
lived-in.
Perhaps the most significant departure from the original is the combat system. The remake
brilliantly bridges turn-based and action combat, creating a hybrid system that feels both
fresh and familiar.
Players can freely move and attack in real-time while charging an ATB gauge that, when
filled, allows for the use of abilities, spells, and items through a tactical menu that
slows time to a crawl.
This creates a compelling rhythm of action and strategy that rewards both quick reflexes and
thoughtful planning.
Each playable character offers a distinct playstyle: Cloud's versatile swordplay, Barret's
ranged capabilities, Tifa's rapid-fire martial arts, and Aerith's powerful magic abilities.
The system encourages switching between characters to exploit enemies' weaknesses and create
devastating combo opportunities.
The Yuffie-centered DLC, while adding some interesting combat mechanics and fort-building
mini-games, ultimately feels like a skippable addition.
Yuffie herself comes across as more annoying than endearing, with her over-the-top
personality often grating against the more serious tone of the main game.
While the DLC provides some additional context for the overall story, its pacing issues and
relatively unengaging narrative make it hard to recommend except to the most dedicated fans.
Despite some pacing issues and contentious story additions, Final Fantasy VII Remake
succeeds as both a reimagining and a standalone game.
The core combat, presentation, and character work are exceptional, even if some of the
expanded content feels like filler.
